What is Chargeable Weight (Volumetric Weight)?
The volumetric weight of a shipment is a calculation that represents its density. A less dense item generally occupies more space compared to its actual weight. To determine shipping costs, the calculated volumetric weight is compared with the actual weight of the package, and the higher figure is used.
Calculation
Multiply the length, height, and width of your parcel (measured in centimetres).
Divide the result by 5,000.
The quotient is the volumetric weight in kilogrammes. Compare this weight with the actual weight of your parcel; the higher value is used to calculate your shipping cost.
Note: All weights are rounded up to the next half kilogram.
Example
Imagine your parcel weighs 10 kg and its dimensions are 30 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm. The calculation would be:
- 30 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm = 75,000
- 75,000 ÷ 5,000 = 15 kg
Since the volumetric weight (15 kg) is greater than the actual weight (10 kg), it will be used in calculating the consignment price.
